Our heart pumps the blood to arteries. The pressure of blood circulation in the arteries can be normal, low or excessive. Excessive pressure can damage kidneys, brain or heart in terms of heart failure, kidney failure or blindness.

· As we grow up, the risk of developing high blood pressure increases.
· Excessive consumption of sodium can cause high blood pressure.

· Due to hormonal change, some women may experience high blood pressure in pregnancy.

· Sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of high blood pressure.
· Birth control pills (oral contraceptives) can increase the likelihood of high blood pressure.
Following are some home remedies to deal with high blood pressure -
· Bananas, dry apricots, orange juice, raisins, spinach, winter squash and boiled potatoes (with skin) help in reducing blood pressure. Add 3-4 servings of vegetables and potassium rich fruits to your diet.
· Add more Vitamin B folate to your diet. You can find it in cereals, whole grain breads and sprouts.
· Maintain the cholesterol level in your blood. Always use good mustard seeds or canola oil.
· Consume fat free dairy foods. The calcium present in the skimmed milk prevents high blood pressure. Drink at least 2 cups of skimmed milk daily.
· Cayenne pepper is known to be very good for treating high blood pressure. It prevents platelets from massing together and allows smoother blood flow.
· Papaya is very good for controlling blood pressure. Eat at least half papaya on empty stomach. Don’t eat anything for two hours after that.
· Vitamin C improves high blood pressure by preventing free radicals to damage the artery walls.
· Green leafy and fiber rich vegetables help in reducing blood pressure. Add 2-3 serving of these in your daily diet.
· Cut back on the consumption of salt and sodium because excessive salt can cause nerves on the blood vessels to over stimulate and get smaller. In this case, heart feels harder t pump. Don’t choose a salt substitute because it may contain potassium chloride.
· Use of garlic can reduce blood pressure. It also adds a good flavor to food.
Take one tablespoon of khus khus (poppy seeds) with water two times daily preferably in morning and evening.
· Take 20-25 curry leaves and boil with one cup of water. Drain off the leaves and drink the juice every day on empty stomach. One of the useful home remedies for high blood pressure.
· Take 2 tablespoons onion juice, 1 tablespoon cumin powder and 1 tablespoon honey. Mix these and have two times daily. One of the effective home remedy for high blood pressure.
· It is a myth that caffeine increases your blood pressure level to a significant amount. If you drink tea or coffee regularly then your body adapts a certain level of caffeine and limited consumption of tea/coffee do not harm your body.
· Obesity is one of the major causes of high blood pressure. Reduce your weight to control the blood pressure. Do exercise regularly such as walking, jogging, swimming, aerobics dance etc.
Your diet affects the blood pressure. Take a diet that is low in fat and cholesterol and high in fiber, potassium and calcium. It may or may not satisfy your taste buds. Do change your eating habits and lifestyle to keep your blood pressure in control. But don’t forget to monitor your blood pressure level regularly.
